1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Satwant Singh S/o S. Gurbachan Singh solemnly affirm as under. This statement is true and no part of it is false.

I, Satwant Singh S/o S. Gurbachan Singh, aged 35 years, reside in A-156, Gujranwala Town, Our house is on the main road.

On 1st November, 1984, two DTC buses came at about 11:30 AM. The Gurdwara is near our house and is clearly visible from there. We were standing on the roof of our house.

There were riots and noise alround. We saw a large crowd alighting from the buses. They were carrying iron rods, wooden sticks and some sacks.

The owner of Sethi Provision Stores, ration shop of our area started leading the mob on his two wheeler Vespa scooter. First of all, they went to the Gurdwara and looted it. They then brought out the holy "Guru Granth Sahib" and the Palki Sahib (the wooden structure to keep the holy book) and burnt them. They also dragged out two Nihangs Singh on the road opposite the Gurdwara, hit them with iron rods and burnt them after pouring some sort of powder on them. The signs of burning are still there on the road.

The car and two-wheeler scooter of the residents of Suri Niwas near the Gurdwara were also burnt. Then their house was also set on fire. A truck parked alongside the Gurdwara was also burnt. A report to that effect was lodged at the Kingsway Police Station, Model Town. On the same day we saw at about 5 PM, that our factory located in B-1, G.T. Karnal Road, Industrial Area was burnt.
