1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Santokh Singh S/o S. Hira Singh, aged 63 years, r/o U-70, Shakarpur, Delhi, solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1. On 31-10-1984, we were extremely sad to hear the news of the assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

2. At 9 / 10 AM next day we saw some people dragging Sikh passengers out of buses and letting them off after beating and insulting them. Sikhs used to run away after release.

3. We became scared on seeing this and we went inside our houses and bolted them. Neither police came nor the mob was stopped from doing all that.

4. In the evening 15 / 20 persons attacked my house. By stone throwing they broke my door. My son told me that Rohtas and man Singh had entered the boundary of our house. My wife begged with folded hands but they even stoned her.

5. I picked up my sword and came out and found Gagan, Roshan, Phool Singh and Durga standing in the mob. They caught my son namely Jatinder, took him out and within my sight burnt him alive to death.

6. My other son Balbir Singh ran out on some other side. Soon police arrived and on seeing sword in my hands they dragged me, my wife, son Manmohan Singh and two daughters in the jeep. I was surprised as to why the police did not stop those persons when they attacked, looted and burnt my house. I had kept the sword for my defence.

7. We were taken by Police to P.S. Kalyanpuri, where we were kept for 2 days and 2 nights.

8. On 3-11-84, we were removed to Farash Bazar where we were kept for many days. My son Balbir Singh also joined us there.

9. This episode has cost me my son and damage of about Rs.1 lakh.
