1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Pritam Singh S/o S. Lehna Singh (deceased) aged 72 years, r/o 20/71, Kalyanpuri, Delhi-91, solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1. On 31-10-84 in the evening we saw vehicles burning on the road outside Kalyanpuri Colony.

2. On 1-11-84 in the morning we came to learn that a huge mob had attacked Block No.11 of our colony. We, the residents of Block No.20 remained inside out house and no attack was made on this Block. Hindus of Blocks No.19 & 21 did not allow the mob to come towards our block.

3. On 3-11-84 Military had reached and the danger was averted. We, the residents of our blocks joined together and organized to keep a watch in the night for about the one month and that is why there was no financial or other loss of life.

4. About a week back from today – 17-8-85, a suspended S.I. Jugti Ram came to my house and called me to the Police Station, where he took me to the room of Chaudhry Manphool Singh. There, Jugti Ram and SHO Surbir Singh Tyagi told me that I should make a statement as per their order and thus help them. Tyagi and Jugti Ram asked me to come to the Court. There they took my signatures at four places on sheets of paper. These sheets were already got typed in English.

I only know Punjabi script. I can sign only and cannot read much. Out of fear I signed those papers at four places. They did not read out any thing to me, nor did they give me any copy of those documents. Later on, they told me that they were collecting such documents in connection with the Commission's Enquiry on riots.
