1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Prem Kaur Wife of Giani Kuldeep Singh, aged 65, resident of MB-76, Shakarpur Extension, Delhi-92, now residing at 2/18, Old Double Storey, Lajpat Nagat, New Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and state: -

On October 31, 1984 at about 9 – 10 PM, I saw a mob attack the residence of our neighbour Avtar Singh Bhatia and pelt stones on his building. We became alert but the mob did not move in our direction.

On November 1, 1984 at about 9 A.M, we heard a lot of noise and peeping through the window curtains, I saw that the residence of our neighbour was being stoned again by a big mob. All were armed with sticks and iron bars. After some time the mob went back. Again at about 11 AM, the mob came. I saw that Avtar Singh was being chased by the mob and Avtar Singh was running in front of the mob. When he reached in front of our house, he was beaten up with rods and lathis. I heard his shricks. I saw his dead body lying in front of our house.

That again at about 4 PM, the noise of mob was heard and I saw Master Tek Chand shouting, "We will not spare Giani Kuldeep Singh – we must kill him." Hearing this threat, we telephoned the police, but we were told that they could not do anything in the matter. Then I saw the mob surrounding our house, broke iron grills, doors and entered the house and set fire to it. We had concealed our son Ravinder Singh aged 37 in the Store Room. But since the house was on fire, we took him out and again concealed him under the gunny begs. However, the mob dragged him to the 'Varanda' and beat him to death with iron bars and sticks. Then they pulled and threw his dead body into the lane.

My husband and I had taken shelter in a neighbour's house in the vicinity. I saw Avinash of the Police Post there with a few men. Seeing him I went forward and my husband entreated with Avinash saying, "I have always rendered social service in this locality and what social service you went me to do now." But the ‘Chowkiwala' fellows pulled my husband out and he was killed within my sight. I saw the dead

Bodies of my son and husband lying side by side which were removed by the police and I never was given the dead bodies for cremation. Our house, printing press, library etc. were completely looted and burnt causing a loss of approximately Rs.4 lacs.
