1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Pishora Singh son of S. Ranjeet Singh, aged 70 years, r/o B-7/26, Krishna Nagar, Delhi-51, do hereby solemnly state on oath as under: -

1. On Oct.31, 1984 we got the news of assassination of Prime Minister. We were highly grieved and therefore, we closed our shop early and came home.

2. On Nov.1, 1984 at about 11.00 AM there was commotion in our colony that fire has erupted in the Lal Quarter Market. On hearing this, I, alongwith my son, went to see my shop. When I was about 50 years away from my shop, SHO Bhaskar of our colony who was in a jeep alongwith 4 – 5 constables met and forbade me to go towards my shop. I sought his help to save my shop. He told me that he does not have adequate force and it is, therefore, not possible to go alongwith me and stop the mob. He apprehended danger to his life. I did not stop there and went towards my shop.

3. Hardly had I gone for some distance that I saw some men standing there. They were known to me. They forbade me to go there. Sensing danger I returned to my house. Bhaskar Saheb, who was standing there, met me. He asked me to run towards my house.

4. On reaching my home, I sent my servants to my shop. On return they informed me that my shop has been set on fire.

5. On Nov.2, 1984 at about 12.00/1.00 PM a mob came to my house. The mob comprised of 500 – 700 men. They had iron rods, lathis, stones, kerosene oil tins with them. In no time they started pelting stones on our house. But our mohalla walas stopped them and enquired as to what they wanted. They started making noise and shouted, "Sardar Gaddar Hai" (Sardar is traitor). They spoke in a provocative tone. The mohalla walas somehow persuaded them to go back.

6. On the mid-night of Nov.2 and Nov.3, 1984, an attack was launched from the back side of our house. But our neighbour Chawla Sahib told the mob that these are our relatives. Thus they sent the attackers back.

7. On Nov.3, 1984 the mob attacked our house at noon time. Inspector Kapoor along with 2 –3 constables was also with the mob. Kapoor pointed his pistol towards me and said that my house was to be searched by them. He ordered the policemen and two persons from the mob to conduct the search of my house. During search, Inspector Kapoor kept his pistol aimed towards me and said that if any incriminating thing was found in search, he would shoot me then and there. During this time the mob kept hovering and shouting around my house.

8. Hardly had they come down after conducting search that military arrived. Before they could launch any attack upon me, there were shouts, "Military has come! Military has come!" Hearing this the mob scattered and at the same time Inspector Kapoor also went away with the mob.

9. I had a shop entitled, "Super Restaurant and Confectioners", which was burnt during the riots. I had come to know this fact by Nov.1, 1984 (evening). I have suffered a loss of about Rs.3 lakhs.
