Affidavit of Niranjan Kaur, widow of late S. Amarjit Singh, aged 29 years, R/o A-3/71, Nand Nagri. Presently residing at C-32, Janta Flats Garhi, East of Kailash.
I, Niranjan Kaur do hereby solemnly state on oath as under: -
1. That right from the morning of 1.11.84 a big mob was breaking open the doors of the houses, was stoning and noises of shrieks and yells were coming from the street, "Salon Ko Mar Do, Zindoon Ko Sar Do". All the members of family, my mother-in-law, my sick father-in-law, my husband and my three children, were sitting inside terrified.
2. In the afternoon the mob knocked at the door of the house again and demanded money on which I handed over one hundred rupees note to my mother-in-law, who passed the same to the mob through the gap in the broken down door.
3. That till evening the noises / shrieks of killing and burning continued.
4. That round about 8 pm the mob again came, and they were now carrying burning torches, iron rods, sticks, sabals and stones. They set the door on fire with the burning torches which they were carrying and said to me to come out along with the children if I cared for the lives.
5. That they then dragged my husband Amarjit Singh out of the house. They pulled me as well as my children and took us near to my mother-in-law. The children remained with my mother-in-law while they dragged me further down at a place near the depot in front of which there is an open space just near where the garbage drums are located.
6. That out of these persons one person whose name is Puran Chand, dragged me along with others further down the street. These persons were about ten or 12 in number and on the way they tore my clothes. Then they threw me on the ground and they raped me. I kept on resisting, they then started hitting me on my arms and shoulders with the iron rods due to which the bone of my arm fractured.
I got injured and I was semi-conscious. After half an hour they left me absolutely naked near my mother-in-law. From the house of Daya Kaur who lives in front of my house, a sheet was brought to cover my body. I was not in my senses and was bleeding profusely. Puran Chand who lives in Nand Nagri and while I was in Gurdwara Nanak Camp, he came there, I recognized him and told the camp volunteer about him who then apprehended him and handed him over to police. FIR was lodged against him in Kingsway Camp Police Station.
7. The same night my second sister-in-law came with her neighbour and took us to her house. Whenever I regained consciousness somewhat, on my inquiry, my mother-in-law told me that my husband and my father-in-law had been killed. That night also I spent writhing in pain. On the second and 3rd Nov.1984 the neighbour of the area looked after me.
8. On 3rd November, 1984 in the evening, the military came and they took us to Nanaksar – Gurdwara Camp. At Nanaksar Gurdwara Camp, I was given medical treatment.
9. That on 11.11.1984, I was hospitalized in the St. Stephen Hospital. There I was kept for 15 days in a General Ward and underwent a major operation, a photo copy of which is annexed herewith. Thereafter since my right arm had been badly hurt by iron rods, I was operated upon and an iron rod was inserted in the bone and nine stitches were given to close the wound. This way for next 15 days I was in the Orthopedic Ward. And after one month I returned to Gurdwara Nanak Piao Camp where other members of my family were living. From Nanak Piao Camp about 15th of Feb.1985, I was allotted a flat at the Garhi camp. The hospital record is also attached herewith.
