Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

AFFIDAVIT OF SHRIMATI MANDODARI DEVI, WIFE OF S. HARI SINGH, AGED 27 YEARS, RESIDENT OF B-166, JAHANGIRPURI, NEW DELHI.

I, Mandodari Devi, the deponent named herein above, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: -

1. On 1-11-84 from 3:00 PM riots erupted in our area. At that time, I and my husband were in our residence. Even before the riots we have been living there. When rioters came repeatedly to beat our neighbours and turned up there time and again, my husband who is a police officer went out to protect the victims.

2. The rioters asked my husband as to why he was saving those people. They told him to get aside. When my husband continued to protect those victims, the rioters attacked my husband from behind with iron rods. Being severely wounded my husband fell down. It was nearly 8:30 PM.

3. Terrified, when I went to bring my husband inside the house, the rioters chased me also. I then left that place. My neighbours who helped in bringing my husband home are: -

i. Ombir Singh,

ii. Datta Rama,

iii. Lakhpat,

iv. Om Prakash,

v. Ramji Lal,

vi. Mohan,

vii. Pawan,

viii. Murari

ix. Ganga Prasad brother of my husband.

My brother-in-law Ganga Parshad was also injured in this riot. We tried to take my husband to a hospital but rioters did not allow us.

4. At 9:00 PM we were able to take my husband to the hospital.

5. The rioters were carrying some kind of powder, which they were using for burning purposes. They belonged C, H & G Blocks. Majority of them were Bengali refugees, who were probably hired by some people.

6. I heard that hoodlums were doing this at the command of one Dalip, a goonda of 'C' Block. Perhaps he was also hired by some other person.
