1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Krishna w/o S. Inder Singh, r/o H.No.157-A, Subhadra Colony, Delhi, do hereby on solemn affirmation state and declare as under: -

1. That on 31.10.84, Amrik Singh my son-in-law came from Bombay. In the evening he along with my son Tarlochan Singh about 24 years went to Y-15, Nangloi, J.J. Colony, Delhi-110041, where sister of Amrik Singh was married. Amrik Singh was about 27 years of age.

2. On 1-11-84, early in the morning I came to know that Sikhs are being beaten and as such I and my husband felt that I should bring back Tarlochan Singh and Amrik Singh from Nangloi, J.J. Colony No.1, Delhi, where I reached at 7 am. At about 8 am I started back because the children told me that they will come soon. But near Punjabi Bagh, the road was blocked and so I returned back.

3. At about 10 am the Non-Sikh mob of about 500 armed with sticks attacked the Sikh houses. Two more Sikhs from outside came running and took shelter in our house.

4. Tarlochan Singh, Amrik Singh and Swaroop Singh and four more Sikhs, whose names I do not know were killed by Non-Sikhs, by striking iron rods on their hands and then sprinkling kerosene oil upon them and then setting them on fire. Gurbachan Singh brother-in-law of Amrik Singh and son of Swaroop Singh with two of his brothers were having swords with them and then they ran for safety with the help of swords.

5. On 2-11-84, in the morning I and other women folk of assassinated Sikhs went to the police station for help, but the police turned us out.

6. When the aforesaid killing took place, police jeep with six seven police officials was present on the scene. I myself say more than 100 Sikhs dead bodies lying outside on the roads and galies. The houses of all the Sikhs were looted and burnt.

7. The police refused to record my report. I visited police station Nangloi for about 30 times in a span of one and a half month immediately after this carnage but my report was never recorded by them about the murders in question.

One Chaman Lal Police Official one day told me that how four sons of late Swaroop Singh escaped killing. The police used to laugh and jeer upon me as and when I narrated the story to them. The police was in hand and glove with the assailants who were generally Hindus and Non-Sikhs and Congress (I) workers. Most of them were from Haryana, in the police force at Nangloi.
