1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Jasbir Kaur wife of Harbhajan Singh, aged 28 years resident of A-14, Gamri, Shahdara, Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm on oath as follows: -

1.On 1.11.1984, at about 9 AM, a mob comprising of 50 – 60 men set ablaze Singh Sabha Gurdwara at Gamri. These people had iron rods and lathies in their hands. They started pelting stones.

2.When those people came towards our house, our men came out with lathies and sticks to protect themselves. The men in the mob could not resist and fled away.

3.Our men went to the police and informed them about all this. The police came at about 10 AM. The policemen told us to go inside our houses and nothing will happen to us. The police said that they will keep a watch outside.

4.On being so advised by the police, our men went to their houses. After some time our men noticed that the police had gone away.

5.At about 12 Noon, a mob comprising of about 2000 – 2500 men came. These men had iron rods, lathis, etc. in their hands. All of us were together in our houses. At that time we were six men three women and three children in the house. Some persons were setting the houses ablaze after throwing some powder.

Some men among the mob climbed up the roof and started beating us. They mercilessly beat our six men and burnt them grievously. Then these men of the mob dragged our men downstairs, threw them on the ground and set them ablaze after throwing some powder on their bodies.

6.The mob looted our house. They heaped some of our goods in the Gurdwara plot and made a bonfire of the same. In this whole occurrence my husband S. Harbhajan Singh was killed.

7.Afterwards somebody made us escape after scaling the wall of our neighbours. The mob reached there also and shouted at the neighbours that they were harbouring Sardars.

It appears to us that all this had happened with the collusion of the police. Police ordered us to go to our homes. Secondly, they assured that they would be keeping vigil. But the mob came moments after the police had left. It appeared as if the police has been waiting for the mob.
