1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Harbhajan Singh, aged about 16 years, son of S. Mohan Singh, r/o C-56, DDA Flats, Slum Tenement, Garhi, New Delhi, do hereby on solemn affirmation state and declare as under:-

1. That earlier I was living at S-55, School Block, Shakurpur, Delhi-110092. On 1-11-84, at about 9 or 10 AM, killing of Sikhs, looting and burning of their properties started within my view. On that date I saw that the house of S. Swaran Singh Kalsi, S-70, Shakarpur, School Block, was attacked by about 600 to 700 Non-Sikhs.

The adjoining house of Karam Singh was also attacked. The mob was being headed by Bhoop Singh Tyagi, Youth Congress (I) President of the area, who was saying loudly, "kill the Sikhs and no body should go away alive", "Blood for blood" and raising other such type of instigating slogans. One Raju of floor mill, Tittoo son of Police Thanedar, Tilak living with Kamla, four police officials of Shakarpur Police Station, when I can identify were also with them.

2. That I say that in my presence, Ajit Singh and Harjinder Singh sons of Swaran Singh, Bhinder Singh son of Karam Singh were killed.

3. On 2-11-84, at about 10 AM mob headed by Bhoop Singh Tyagi, also attacked my house. My father Mohan Singh and Angat Singh, who were hiding in the house of Vijay neighbour were forcibly taken out and they were given blows of iron rods in their heads by one Raju and Gora residents of Shakarpur, who can be identified by me and who are living near New Pracheen Shiv Mandir, Shakarpur. Thereafter, they put one gunny bags upon them with kerosene oil on it and they were then burnt alive.

4. Then thereafter one another Bhoop Singh resident of the area heard myself and my brother weeping. He could identify my brother Harkeerat Singh and this Bhoop Singh immediately brought Bhoop Singh Tyagi with mob to the spot. Bhoop Singh Tyagi threw my brother from the top of the house in the street and then he was burnt alive. When his clothes were burning he tried to run away, but Kalu Nai of Shakarpur had slain him with sword and then remains were burnt. Then our house was looted and was then burnt. I and my brother Inderpal Singh, years of age, were already clean shaven and hence we ran away and could not be identified by any one and were saved. My brother Harkeerat Singh was 19 years of age.

5. Police was present at the spot, but we were not protected at all. Police did not take action against the culprits. In fact police was indulging into killing, looting and burning along with the mob. Congress (I) leaders and workers planned and executed this conspiracy against Sikhs.
