1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Gurnam Singh son of S. Ujagar Singh aged 26 years resident of 28/59, Kasturba Nagar, Shahdara, Delhi-32, do hereby solemnly state on oath as follows: -

1. 1.11.1984, I took scooter and left my house at 8.30 AM I got a passenger from Seelampuri who had to go to Nand Nagri. At about 10 O'clock when the passenger alighted at Nand Nagri, a mob comprising of 100 – 150 men surrounded me and started brick batting my scooter. Some men forcibly dragged me from my scooter and started abusing me. One man forcibly cut my hair with scissors.

2. I greatly frightened, directly came to my house and narrated them the entire incident. The neighbours immediately gathered there and the Hindus and Sikhs unitedly started guarding the locality and barricaded the streets with stones etc.

3. In the evening some outsiders attempted to enter our mohalla but the mohallwals did not allow them. Hindus and Sikhs guarded the area.

4. On 1.11.1984, police came at about 8 PM, police asked the mohalla people to go to their respective houses and that now the police will be on guard. But the police left after some time and the mohalla people again started keeping the watch.

5. At about 9 PM a mob tried to attack us. The lanes were barricaded and being guarded by people. Mohalla people did not allow the mob to enter. Men in the mob made lot of hue and cry and ultimately went back.

6. At about 1 to 1.30 AM the mob came again. They were raising slogans, "Sardaro Ko Maaro" (Kill the Sardars) but even then the mohalla people did not allow them to enter. This continued for the whole night. The mohalla people did not allow the mob to enter. Therefore, the mob could not succeed in attacking and killing us.

7. On 2.11.1984, also we remained scared for the whole day. Mohalla people stood guard turn by turn.

8. On 2.11.1984, the military came in the evening. Then there was some peace.
