1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Gurcharan Kaur, widow of Rawel Singh, aged 39 years, r/o A-3/82, Nand Nagari, Delhi, now residing at 5-A-137, Faridabad N.I.T., do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: -

1. On 31-10-84 at about 10:00 PM when my husband was returning from Moti Nagar to Nand Nagri by bus, a mob of 30 – 35 people pulled him out of the bus at Krishan Ganj Pul and beat him up and caused him head injuries. However, he managed to reach home with the help of my cousin (Aunt's son) who is clean – shaven. On reaching home, we dressed his wounds.

2. On 1-11-84 at about 10:00 AM a mob of about 300 people who were armed with iron rods and were carrying some materials for setting things on fire entered out lane. As they entered our lane, they started stoning and looting the houses, and setting them on fire. I saw Dr. Verma, Chakiwala and family members of Jamna Devi were with this mob, which proceeded further after committing acts of looting and arson. They did not attack my husband since he had shaved his long hair and beard. Again, in the evening, a mob of about 300 people came to our lane, but seeing my shaved husband, did not harm to him.

3. On 2-11-84 at about 8:30 AM, we were sitting in our house when a mob of about 150 people came to our house. I recognized Chakiwala among the mob. They dragged my husband out of the house and after pouring kerosene on him, set him on fire. I saw some policemen accompanying the mob. We all were locked up in our house. We could not even get the dead body of my husband.

4. On 3-11-84 the men of Relief Camp Guru Nanak Piao removed us to the Camp. We stayed there for four days. We did not lodge a report to the police as we were afraid of consequences.

5. The persons who took part in burning my husband and whom I recognize are:

1) The son of Chakiwala – A – Block Nand Nagri.

2) Jamna and her sons – Congress (I) leaders.

3) Dr. Verma, Congress leader.
