1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Gurbachan Kaur, widow of Late S. Sher Singh, aged 45 years, resident of Y-647, J.J. Colony Nangloi, Delhi, presently residing at C-22B, Tilak Vihar, New Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and state on oath as under: -

1. On 1st November, 1984, at about 11 am, a mob came, they were abusing and threatening to abduct the daughters of the Sardars, "Where is your Bhinderwala, bring him and now we will make your Khalistan."

2. The railway line is opposite our house, in the meantime a train arrived, and stopped there it was full of persons. Those persons alighted from the train and were carrying lathies and pointed iron rods, scooter-chains, pick-forks and white powder, which caught fire as soon thrown on anything stones, bottles.

Those people were looting the houses of Sikhs and were burning the houses and were killing the Sikhs. The people from our street were also with the mob.

3. When the mob arrived in our street them, the Mohammedans of Street No.3, Sweeper and Chamars came and took all of us out of our houses. They told us that they were saving us, and nothing would happen to you. the ration shop owner Hamid's sons and his other friends took us and brought us to the house of a Hindu.

4. One other neighbour's son 'Pappu' these four boys on scooter arrived from the Gurdwara side and hid themselves in a Hindu's house. At about 11 pm. When the mob arrived, then Sajanni, Partap Singh gate-maker, and the lawyer who lives in our street, informed the mob about the said Sardar boys who had taken shelter / hid themselves in that Hindu's house and set it on fire.

All the boys were hiding under the bed, all were pulled out from under the bed and were beaten on the head with iron rods, lathis and were put on fire with said white powder. Men of the mob were wearing white rubber gloves and were killing men and shouting that they were creating, "Khalistan of Sikhs."

5. On 2-11-84, at about 5:25 o'clock Mohammedans from their Mosque announced on loud speakers that the army has their respective houses. The curfew is going to be imposed and there is no cause for alarm. At about 6 o'clock, Hamid his sons, Amarjit, Madan, Partap brother of Sarla, Kabari gunny beg dealer, Pratap gate-maker father of Joginder), Hari son of iron monger, Kishan milk vendor, Randhir milk vender (all those people live in our colony), Kishan from Sultanpuri, Randhir, Nathu Jain who lives in our colony, glass bangle dealer who was informing about the hiding Sikhs, Shyam kerosene oil dealer was supplying kerosene to the mob for burning people, Mota Halwai, dry cleaner, Ghullu (sweeper) who lives in street No.3, Ishwar sweeper were killing our Sikhs.

The owner of Dharma Kanta walla was killing people with iron pick-fork. Bhatia who resides in Punjabi Colony, Dharma husband of sweeper, and his son, Netaji who resides five six houses away from my house, electric dealer Poonam, Ami Chand tyre dealer, police people who were wearing civilian clothes and other persons from our colony whose names I do not know but I can otherwise recognize them, came together and asked us to came out of that Hindu's house and threatened that Hindu that if does not turn out the Sikhs from his house, they will burn his house. All of us were forcibly taken out from that house by the mob.

6. While I and my husband were proceeding towards our house, we heard a sound either it was of cracker or a gun shot, we got scared and we tried to take shelter in the house of Kabari Gunny bag walla but they turned us out and then we both went to the house of his neighbour tyre walla but they did not let us enter. Then we went to the shop of tyre-walla, which is opposite his house and I hid my husband behind the tyres and covered him with gunny bags. When mob came Kabari and tyre-walla pointed out to the mob that Sardar is hiding there, mob took out my husband killed him with iron rods, daggers and burnt him with the powder.

7. Mob was shouting that they will now take away the women folks of Sikhs to their houses and make them their concubines. Their men-folks have been killed – now they will have to live with us only. They advanced towards us with mischievous intentions. Then we all the ladies joined together and proceeded towards Nangloi Police Station.

The police of the Police Station did not allow us to enter the Police Station and were shouting upon us, "Go away, go away, you are Sikh bitches." When we begged of them again and again and cried then they relented and allowed us to enter and they warned us that if females and children cried there, then they would be beaten terribly. A meeting had been held by Bhagat Singh, Amarjit, Dr. Bhatia and Hamid and others for killing the Sikhs.

8. That on 3-11-84 at about 4 o'clock we reached Gurdwara Bhatha Sahib.
