1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Gulab Singh, aged 75 years, son of S. Sohan Singh, previously resident of G.I. Ashok Vihar Phase-I, Delhi, now resident of D-619, Krishan Nagar, Delhi-51, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1. On 31-10-1984, when we heard the news of assassination of our beloved Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, we felt very sad and we closed our shop and came back home.

2. On 1-11-84, my friend, Chander Parkash told me on telephone that Lal Quarter Market has been set on fire. I had a shop No.B-32, Mandir Road, Krishan Nagar, Delhi as Capital Super General Store and in it the work of manufacture of bags and suitcases and their sale was carried out. I did not go to the shop because I came to know that the Sikhs were being beaten and killed outside and their shops were being looted.

3. On 8-11-1984, when I went to see my shop, I was told by Gian Chand, the landlord of the shop that on 1-11-84 at about 5:00 PM, my shop was looted by the mob. He (landlord) requested them with folded hands not to burn the shop as the building belonged to hindus and the shops were of Sikhs. He himself lived on the upper portion of my shops along with his family. They broke the shutter of my shop and took it with them and burnt all the articles on the road. I have suffered a loss to the tune of Rs.94,000/- in this.
