I, Bachittar Singh, son of S. Baba Singh, aged 33 years, resident of 245, Parkash Mohalla, Garhi, Lajpat Nagar, Delhi state on oath: -
1. On 31. 10. 84 when we heard of the sad demise of our Prime Minister, we were grieved greatly.
2. On 1. 11. 84 at about 9. 30 two persons of my Mohalla told me that in Ashram Chowk and Lajpat Nagar Sardars are being killed, their shops and cars were being burnt. After hearing this, we the residents of the mohalla, Hindus and Sikhs collected together and started watch duty at three points.
3. On 1. 11. 84 at about 12. 30 pm we saw that a crowd of 400 / 500 persons was coming from D-Block, East of Kailash. In their hands were saryas, dandas and oil tins. The crowd was shouting slogans,"Indira Gandhi Zindabad; Khoon Ka Badla Khoon." In front of the crowd were six policemen in uniform and carrying rifles. The crowd started to throw stones on arrival. We also started to throw back the same stones. In this set, both Hindus and Sikhs were acting together. Seeing this, one policeman from amongst those came forward.
4. This policeman belongs to Amar Colony Chowki and I recognize him. He said, "Hindus and Sikhs separate out." Then Bhatia Sahib replied we are all one-we will not split." Amongst us Lala Janak Raj who owns a ration shop and Giani Kulwant Singh were standing there. Then the policeman said, "You all people go inside, we will safeguard you." Bhatia Sahib replied, "you are asking us to go inside but those who have come to kill us, - first you prevent those." The policemen said, "To stop those persons – we have no orders, and said – one Sardar should go and compromise with the crowd." Lala Janak Raj said, "No Sardar will go to compromise." Then Lala Janak Raj, who was standing amongst us, went to the mob and said something to them. The crowd went back. From that mob, I know some persons: -
1) Dhamal Singh s/o Lambaradar
2) Charan Das of Sunil General Store
3) Sunil Kumar s/o Charan Das
4) Balli Gujjar of Tea Stall
5) Mota Nai (Fat Barber)
They all belong to Garhi and some have shops in the market.
3. All these started to asked me,"Do your want you shops or your life." Without saying any thing I returned home in my jeep. After sometime when I heard that the military is helping Sikhs, we decided to go to the military. We were still discussing that Babu Khan came to my house at 4 pm and said with folded hands that whatever has happened, you come and lock your shops.
We again went to our shops. On seeing the shops, we came to know that by forcibly opening the rear door of the shop, which opened into Babu Khan's house, the shop had been emptied of expensive goods and the junk iron had been dumped in the place of Gurmail Singh who is a tenant of Swami Ji. We have photographs of this.
4. Then on 7-11-84, I brought back that stuff to my shop. And amongst that were so heavy irons, which could not have been taken out by any other way and thrown out except through Babu Khan's house. Then I looked into Babu Khan's shop. I saw that these wooden planks, which were in my shop were soaked in oil were now fixed in Babu Khan's shop. He himself said, "The card-board boxes of the motors, which are empty are lying on my roof. Have these lifted also." These conversations prove that my entire stock was looted by Babu Khan.
