1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Amarjit Kaur aged about 30 years, wife of Late Satnam Singh r/o C-13, DDA Flats, Slum Tenements, Garhi, Delhi, do hereby on solemn affirmation state and declare as under: -

1. That during the relevant time I alongwith my husband and family were living in H.No.2094, Prem Nagar, New Delhi-110008.

2. On 1-11-84, my husband told me that properties of Sikhs was being looted by Non-Sikhs and their houses and vehicles are being burnt. I could see myself through out the day that smokes were rising from about all sides in Delhi from the burning of properties of Sikhs and the Non-Sikhs had been bringing lot of movable looted property of Sikhs and were passing through our street, which they took to their houses.

3. That on 2-11-84, my husband tried to go for a milk from milk booth, but he came back without milk and told me that lot of looting, burning and killing of Sikhs is taking place outside. Throughout the day heavy smoke columns were rising on all sides in Delhi, which were obviously from the burning of properties of Sikhs. We remained to our house.

4. On 3-11-84, the same position continued. At about 4.30 PM we were watching the TV after some time we heard noise outside and there was knocking at the doors of our house. My husband Satnam Singh and his father S. Pritam Singh went to the roof and I also followed them from there, I could see Nandu, kerosene oil vender and Babu owner of buffaloes and one Suresh of Prem Nagar, with iron rods in their hands and with big mob with stones in their hands were standing outside. On seeing us all the three told the mob that this is the house of Sikhs and the Sikhs should be killed. The mob started throwing stones on us. We got down in the house. In the meantime the door of the house was broken by them. Nandu, Babu and Suresh with some more persons forcibly entered our house and they set on fire our scooter in the court-yard. My husband tried to plea for mercy before Nandu, Suresh and Babu, with folded hands, but Nandu, Suresh and Babu dragged Satnam Singh outside in the street and started beating him with iron rods. Then they told the mob to loot our house. I with my children, father-in-law rushed to a nearby house of one Naresh for shelter.

5. In the meantime, these assailants also broke open the house of one Dalip Singh, H.No.2094/4A, and dragged him out and took away by beating him with iron rod towards Baljeet Nagar Pahari, where he subsequently was found dead and burnt.

6. Military reached the spot. We were taken to the police station. My father-in-law lodged an FIR No.559 dtd. 3-11-84, Police Station Patel Nagar at about 5 PM, which is stating offences under section 147/148/149/427/436/454/364/302 IPC. But though two of the accused were stated to have been arrested by the Police, but they are now at large roaming about and not in custody. I gave my statement in details as above to the police.

7. I am unable to go live in my house in Prem Nagar because there is no security of life there. Action may be taken against the culprits.
