Lal Khooh is a historic well is located in a bazaar inside Mochi Gate.
This well was once in Chandus haveli (mansion) and there used to be a small prison cell near this well where Chandu imprisoned Sri Guru Arjun Sahib Ji after arresting him in 1606 AD.
During his detention, Guru Arjan used to drink water from this well and also used it for his bath. It is also the place where Guru Arjan was put through different tortures.
In 1619 AD when Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji came to Lahore, Chandu was led by a nose string around the city and it was here that a 'Bharbhonja' (one who sells poached grams) killed Chandu with his ladle.
In the beginning this sacred place was a small place but later the Sikh Sangat spent money and bought the adjacent houses and built a Gurdwara building.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee remained in charge of the Gurdwaras care and maintenance from 1927 to 1947 AD and at present it is in custody of Paksitan Waqf Board. There is a shop, 21 canal and 14 marlas of land in the name of Gurdwara in the Khokhar village of the Lahore district.
A number of factors led to the arrest, trial and torture of Guru Arjan. Emperor Jahangir, a notorious alcoholic, drug addict and womanizer, already hated Guru Arjan for several reasons.
After Guru Arjan was arrested he was taken to Lahore for a kangaroo court (fake trial). The trial of Guru Arjan was held to give the appearance of a fair and just trial, even though the verdict had in reality already been decided before the trial had begun.
Jahangir ordered that Guru Arjan to be tortured after the Guru had refused to stop preaching his message of God as started by Guru Nanak.
Before the arrest, torture, and martyrdom of Guru Arjan, the Sikhs had nothing to do with weapons or violence, as all the Sikh Gurus had taught the message of compassion, love, dedication, hard work, worship of one God, and the commitment to peace and harmony for all the peoples of the world.
